Yesterday, Mrs Garbutt's class delighted the whole school and many parents in their Sharing Assembly. The children spoke so clearly and with great expression. We heard all about their number work with money and their bean planting. The Reception class are also incubating some eggs which hopefully will hatch in the next three weeks. Watching the children's faces and hearing them talk about the new chicks is just magical.
Well done RG!
This week our Year 1 and Year 3 classes have presented their Spring Concerts for the school and for parents. They were brilliant and made everyone feel happy and proud. In a musical celebration of Spring festivals, Year 1 children showed us how wonderful it is to live in a rich and vibrant multi cultural city like Leeds. Year 3 children wowed the audience with their superb Victorian musical. One parent told me he just didn't know how the teachers could organise such great concerts with such young children. I think it is the result of dedicated and creative staff and wonderful, happy and confident children. The perfect recipe for success!
Happy Easter holidays to you all!
This week has been parents' evening. We think most children will be happy with their reports.
Last week years 5 and 6 went to Malham Cove as part of their rivers topic. Everybody had a good time.
All the children are getting quite excited about the Auction Of Promises which is a fund raising event next term. Parents can bid for their child to be Head teacher for a day as well as many other promises that the teachers are making.
It is also really nice to be playing on the school field now that spring has sprung.
Hello! We all hope you had a great Christmas holiday and a fantastic New Year. Here is a January update on what's happening at Highfield Primary School!
We have had Fabian Hamilton visit our school and he said it was "OUTSTANDING". He met all of the school councillors and attended a meeting about being an MP.
The other exciting thing that happened this was....HEARTSTART. Mrs Woodward taught all the year sixes how to save someone's life in an emergency. Some parents also attended an evening Hearstart workshop.
Next week we are all looking forward to a visit from Paul Cookson, a children's poet and author.
This term's Christmas Productions have been "outstanding!"
The staff and children have worked so hard over the last two weeks and thoroughly deserved the applause and smiles received from the audiences. I was amazed to see children as young as six singing solo on the school stage. It is no wonder that our children become such self confident well rounded young people when they are offered so many opportunities to take part in theatrical and musical productions.
We are all delighted with our recent Ofsted Inspection Report, which graded the school as Outstanding. The report recognised our wonderful children, highly supportive parents and governors and our inspirational staff team.
Positive statements in the report include:
"Exceptional Curriculum"
"Excellent attitudes to learning"
"Excellent committment of parents and carers"
Please read the full report which you can find in the Achievements section of this website.
Well done to everyone who has made Highfield such a wonderful school!
Thank you to everyone who supported our Autumn Fair yesterday. It was great to see so many parents and children filling the school hall and having so much fun. Congratulations Euan Armitage, (Alex's brother) who won the Harry Potter treasure hunt and Jaya McCorry, who won the Hoola Hoop competition with an outstanding 12 minutes and 25 seconds!
Events such as the Autumn Fair only happen because of the dedication and hard work of "The Friends". The Friends had their AGM on Monday evening and it was great to see new Reception parents joining the committee. With parents from every year group now on the committee, we will be able to continue planning enjoyable events for the children and parents.
Last Friday we held an International Day in school to celebrate the many cultural and religious festivals taking place this term. It was lovely to see so many parents (over 100!) coming together to share an international breakfast in the school hall. The children all had an opportunity to wear free dress for the day and many chose to wear their cultural dress. I enjoyed trying all the different foods that were brought to school from Parkin to Turkish Delight! In Assembly the reception classes waved their flags as we all sang together. Seren and Yasmine in year 6 read out a list of 52 different countries where our families come from. A great day, well done everyone!
Last night I felt so proud of our Year 6 children. Their performance of "Alice" was outstanding. Every child gave it their best and the atmosphere in the school hall was pure primary school magic. The staff and children had worked so hard and I'm sure all the families watching felt as proud as I did. It was lovely to see Mr Tindle at the performance. He was delighted with the children and was also very impressed with the school building now that it is finally completed and the portacabins removed.
I would like to wish all our year six children success and happiness in their next stage of education.
Enjoy the summer holidays everyone.
Alwoodley, Moortown and Roundhay Extended Services will be producing a summer activity booklet this year. This should be coming to schools before we close for the summer holidays.

The portacabins have officially been removed, to make an addition to the playground. Everybody has been delighted about the news.
Well done Year 6 for finishing the SATs this week. You have made a lot of progress. Congrats!
Happy 11th Birthday Walking Bus! You have shown a vast amount of effort. Well Done!
Finally Mrs Pickles has announced her retirement at the end of this term. We thank her for 16 years at Highfield and hop she enjoys her last few weeks with us.
SPRING IS HERE ! YAY
We watched the year 1and year 3,4 Spring Concerts this week. We were amazed by the performances.
NOOO ITS APRIL FOOLS DAYYYY we have been tricked already !!!The sneaky teachers will be trying trick us but were way too smart to let them trick us!!!
Also remember to bring your made easter eggs for the competition (hard boiled eggs if you are in KS1 and Rec) after the holidays.
We've really enjoyed going on the field these last two weeks and have had loads of fun playing games and more games!
We hope you have enjoyed this term !!! it was faboulous ITS JUICY FRIDAY I HOPE U REMEMBERED YOUR 50p
See everyone back at school on 18th April
Last week on the 18th of March it was Red Nose Day and our school raised over 400 pounds. Well done!
This week we have moved into our new dance and music studio. It's a brilliant new space for us to enjoy.
This week has been very sunny and we've been able to play on the field. YAY! Also yr6 people have their common room but hardly any pupil went in this week because of the sun. Year six have also enjoyed Bikeability training this week.
There was a football tournament on Saturday at Leeds Grammar School. Our school took part and we came runners up. It was yr4 that took part in the tournament. Mr Brassil took them, so well done yr4 and thank you Mr Brassil.
We hope you had as much fun as we did this week. Have a nice weekend everyone.
Dramatic news! HIGHFIELD HAS WON A FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT. We are becoming the best school for football in the area. Our best friends, George W and Keown B scored a cracker!!!!!!!! The secret of our victory is team work!!! So if you want win a match take our advice!!
Keown and George were making good and positive comments about the team. So the team thought of giving them a chance to score a goal. Keown's goal was funny, the ball went through the goalkeeper's legs. George had a hard shot and it curved into the back of the net!!!
The whole team played fair because of Oliver's nice leadership!
players who played: Oliver D, Jacob K, Jeet D, George W, George N, Natasha K, Jack G, and Keown B
A special thanks to Mr Brassil for some great coaching.
We had a very interesting day on Thurday, Mrs. Colley asked us to come with her to Brodetsky Primary School. We had a very interesting morning watching the Lord Mayor planting a tree in memory of Anne Frank. Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who died in the Holocaust.
We attended a morning assembly at the school which was quite different to ours.
All the children sat down and some of the teachers spoke and they did a singing assembly in Hebrew. Some students from year 6 did a speech and told us about Anne Frank (IT WAS VERY INTERESTING). After the assembly we went outside and watched the mayor plant the tree and listened to some more speeches about Anne Frank.
Next we had a tour around their outside classroom, as they call it. We saw some chickens and Charley and Mrs Colley went in to feed them. Ben didnt want to go in!
After that we went into the staffroom to have some biscuits and drinks.
We thought it would be a nice idea to plant a tree at school in memory of Anne Frank.

Happy New Year to everyone, we hope you had a great time and we hope you're enjoying 2011 !
As you know the school has invested in some new laptops for the years 4,5 and 6 .We are looking forward to using them in class.
The Annexe is going considerably well and it should be ready by the middle of March. Can't wait to try out our moves on the new dance floor and do some drama in there!
On Wednesday 5B did an assembly on respecting people and how we all want to be respected. It was a powerful message to all!
Next Wednesday everyone is looking forward to 5/6H's assembly.
Bye for now George and George.
What a busy term we've had at highfield! As well as all the excitment we have had the deepest snow in living memory! As you know school was closed for a day two weeks ago -the children were very upset!
The concerts we've had were very special and we loved them all. The Reception's was very good and they were great at singing. Year 2's play was extra special and we loved it. The Year 5/6's play, by the crowd's reaction, we could tell that it was very funny!(especially the swans!) The choir and orchestra were very talented in their music and singing. Thankyou parents of Highfield for coming along and supporting your children.
This term we've had a rollercoaster ride due to the weather but even that can't stop us having a great time!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Dont forget to come back on Tuesday the 4th of January 2011.
On Friday 15th October Fabion Hamilton visited our school council meeting! He dicussed about what it's like to be an MP and answered questions from the school councillors. He said that he has been to different meetings and has even met David Cameron our Prime Minister! Fabion said that he thinks his new leader of his Party is very clever but is quite young for the job.
Fabion said that he has been working in the government for 13 years! That's quite long! He also said that he travels from London to Leeds quite often, and says he really likes Leeds! Fabion tries to help our enviroment by cycling as much as he can. I think he is a very nice person who tries to help everyone as much as he can and I hope you can meet him some time too!
Back to school again! Hope you all had a great summer holiday. Now our school is a lot bigger and we have over three hundred and thirty children here. We have elected some new school councillors who you will be meeting on Wednesday, also new monitors have been chosen from Year one all the way to Year six. We are sure you will see them around school. We're pleased to hear that by Monday our new playground should be ready and the new school by half term.
It has been a really successful year at school. I have so much enjoyed my first year at Highfield, getting to know all our wonderful staff and families. We all now thoroughly deserve a lovely summer break and I do hope that today's sunshine continues for the next few weeks.
Next year will be a very exciting one and I am really looking forward to seeing the completed new school extension project.
A special goodbye to our Year 6 children, they have been a great year group and I wish them well for High School.
Have a super summer holiday everyone and see you all back at school on Monday 6th September.
Marrick week was brilliant! There was yummy food and really good weather. It was hot everyday, with no rain what so ever! We did a lot of activities and really challenging ones, especially the climbing up the tree to the zip wire. As well as the zip wire, we also did some archery. It was really difficult to get a bull's eye and pop a balloon! The walk is very long and exhausting, so watch out year 5.
We can strongly recommened this for the year 5s, it was great and you will get loads of confidence doing all the fantastic activies!
We are missing Marrick already.
Alex and Megan
Highfield's greatest win has arrived! Last Tuesday we played Roundhay St John's Primary. The match began and 30 seconds into the game, Kwame delivered a stunning finish to make it 1-0. The end score was 10-0 to highfield! Although we won, Roundhay St Johns played a good game. If only England could play as well!
Also last week, Chris Edwards, the Chief Executive for Education Leeds, came to Highfield and visited all the classes. Chris Edwards said in his blog: "Mrs Colley and her colleagues are releasing a very special kind of magic at Highfield Primary School."
This week is a very busy week. Not only have the year 6's gone to Marrick, it is also Fit week. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the England team are fit this week and do as well as we did in our match!
Hello my name is Joshua and I am in year 5. I was chosen this week to do the Highfield Blog.
On Wednesday the 9th June Taffy Thomas came to our school. Taffy Thomas was an amazing laureate storyteller. He had a silk coat with lots of pictures of animals on it. What you would do is pick an animal from his silk coat and he would tell you a mystical story. But before the story he would tell you a riddle to solve, to get your brain working! Taffy Thomas has been in newspapers and has also met the Queen! Taffy's wise saying is, "if talking was more important than listening we would have two tongues and one ear." In my opinon Taffy Thomas is the best storyteller in the world. I hope we can have lots more of these events at Highfield. Thanks Mr Brassil for organising it.
Friday 27th May
Hello everyone and welcome to Highfield's first Blog. I hope you also like the new look website. It's been a very busy half term and next half term looks even busier. We are looking forward to Marrick, various sports activities, Skipton Castle, Newby Hall, Summer Fairs, the Year 6 Concert, orchestra afternoons, steel pans, Fit Week and so much more!!
Please have a lovely half term and see you all back on Monday June 7th
