Childrens Work : Reception
Beginning school is one of the most exciting times in a child’s life, and probably one of the most daunting for parents! Here at Highfield our main aim is for the children to settle into school as quickly as possible, feel safe and confident, develop independence and to build new friendships and relationships.
In the Foundation Stage we work in a similar way to nursery – structured play and activities alongside the more formal learning. Throughout the year there is an increase in the amount of formal activities in preparation for Year 1. The classrooms are organised into play areas with a whole range of exciting resources and play equipment. Children have access to all areas throughout the day, including the outdoor provision.
The children quickly pick up the sounds of letters, number recognition and other basic skills. Before long they will be beginning to read and write with some independence! We also enjoy topics about ourselves, the seasons, weather, farms, houses and homes, shopping and minibeasts. We celebrate festivals of all religions and perform the Christmas nativity story through song each year. With all topics we try to make as many links as possible to the children’s experiences using music and songs, art activities and visits to enhance learning.
Children in the Foundation Stage visit Meanwood Valley Farm, the High Ash shops and Newby Hall. Newby Hall is always a favourite trip providing the weather is good! We look for mini beasts and sculptures, enjoy a train ride, have a picnic and play in the playground!
