   Childrens Work : Years 1 and 2  Years 1 and 2

In Year 1 and 2 we like to take part in sharing assemblies and productions for our parents, and to go out on visits linked to topic work. Topic work is on a two year rolling programme and is varied and interesting with activities such as making fruit kebabs in food technology, an exploration walk to look at the traffic and buildings in the local area for Houses and Homes, a visit to Thwaite Mills and a visit to a real castle in Skipton. Our teachers help us to develop our skills in many ways e.g. through cutting, drawing, papier mache and by  expressing ourselves through paint and other media.

Year 1 children continue to be encouraged to develop their independence. They read regularly and have daily phonics practice. The setting becomes more formal than in Reception, although there are still many opportunities for role play linked to topic work and including literacy activities. Daily Numeracy and Literacy sessions take place, where children experience mental, oral, practical and written maths as well as oral storytelling and role play leading to creative writing. The curriculum includes a wide range of opportunities for children to find their areas of excellence, including physical exercise such as dance and tennis.

The children continue with these opportunities in Year 2, continuing with a daily maths, phonics and literacy session. They look in more detail at fiction and non-fiction texts and experience many different approaches to literacy e,g, hot-seating and other drama techniques in addition to regular reading and writing practice. At the end of Year 2 they are assessed by their teacher for the SATs.
