Pupils Area : Introduction

A view from a past pupil

Holly Dymoke - Marr  1999 - 2006

My name is Holly and I would just like to tell you about how great Highfield is. The staff are all kind and enthusiastic. Extra help is always available for anyone that needs it.

All the school trips that we went on were all fun and educational. During my seven years at Highfield we went on two residentials and millions of other trips. We went to Robin Hood's Bay in Year 4 for two nights and Marrick Priory in Year 6 for 4 nights. All the facilities and activities there are excellent.

Highfield is one excellent school for everyone. My high school is nothing compared to Highfield. Highfield gave me the confidence to meet new people and cope with life at high school.

The School Council  2006 - 2007

On the School Council, from year 2-6, two School Council members (preferably a boy and a girl) are selected. Those students will then, every 3 weeks, attend a meeting and discuss everything going on in school and how they could make it better. In class, there is a suggestion book so if anybody has any ideas all they have to do is write it down and the councillors will take it to the meeting to see if they can do anything about it.

In the School Council, some of our members are Executive Committee;

All of our councillors recently took a trip to the Lord Mayor's Council Chamber. They were offered orange juice and biscuits and they got to ask the Lord Mayor questions. They found out that some meetings can take over 3hrs!

One of the problems the School Council has successfully managed to solve is the school dinners' mashed potato. A few of the school dinner people complained in one of the suggestion books which was then taken to School Council who asked the dinner ladies if they could change from packet mash to real mash. Now a lot more people like it and one school dinner person quotes 'I didn't used to like the mash, but now it tastes just like my mums'!'

In the School Council, as well as trying to make school a better place, they arrange different activities to raise money for different causes. They are in the middle of 'Bun day Monday', where about every 3 weeks different year groups bring in buns which are sold for 20p per bun. On their very first sale they raised a whopping £90.40!!! This money will be shared out between all the classes and they can then choose what they wish to spend it on.

As well as 'Bun day Monday' the School Council also arranged a second hand toy sale, where everybody brought in their second hand toys and the School Council sold them at prices from 20p-£2. It was a great success and they raised around £64!!!

The School Council are the Health and Safety monitors who check for any problems in school then write them down on a sheet of paper on one of our display boards. That then goes to Mr Thompson, our caretaker who sorts it all out.

The School Council have also helped Mrs Taylor organise playtime rotas and games and asked Mr Thompson to improve the locks and doors in the toilets.

School Council has been going on a long time and is always a great success, in fact the School Council are hoping to spend their raised money from the second hand toy sale on recyling bins for the scrap paper in all the classrooms.

In the future the School Council would like to try and save more energy by getting special lights and recycling more. They hope to make the school as green as its uniform!
