THis month we have been celebrating Black History Month. This morning I shared with the children the inspirational story of Betty Campbell, the first black headteacher in Wales. Betty was born in 1934 and was told at an early age by a teacher that she should not dream of becoming a teacher because it would be a problem for her due to the colour of her skin. Betty was determined to change these attitudes and she not only became a teacher but also a head teacher and later in her life beacme a member of the Commission for Racial Equality. Last month the city of Cardiff recognised her legacy and unveiled a fabulous staue of Betty in Cardiff's central square. I hope every child at Highfield can grow up with the belief that they can be whatever they choose to be in life.
